What is EDC cross-linking? EDC (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide) cross-linking is a chemical process that strengthens collagen fibers, enhancing the membrane’s durability and resistance to enzymatic degradation—without leaving behind toxic residues.

Biocompatibility means that the membrane is well tolerated by the body, does not trigger an immune reaction, and supports natural tissue regeneration.

Membranes are used in regenerative procedures such as GBR (Guided Bone Regeneration) and GTR (Guided Tissue Regeneration) to create a protective barrier that separates soft tissue from the bone graft, allowing for proper bone formation.

If the membrane degrades too quickly, it may lose its barrier function before bone regeneration is complete—leading to incomplete bone formation and compromised clinical outcomes.

The main function of a resorbable collagen membrane is to prevent soft tissue from growing into the regenerating area. This process takes time—typically several months. Thanks to its cross-linked structure, the Ti-oss® GUIDE membrane lasts up to 3–6 months, providing reliable protection throughout the entire regeneration period.

EDC (ethyl carbodiimide) is a compound that bonds the collagen fibers within the membrane structure. As a result:

  • the membrane becomes more durable,
  • it degrades more slowly in the body,
  • and it protects the regenerating area for a longer period.

Do you know what happens after implantation?

A good bone graft doesn’t resorb too quickly. Ti-oss® has a porous structure that maintains volume over time, giving the body enough time to build new bone. If the graft collapses, there won’t be enough space left for the implant.

The more macro- and micropores a bone graft material has, the easier it is for:

  • new blood vessels to form,
  • osteoblasts to attach,
  • and regeneration to begin.

Ti-oss® multiporosity actively supports angiogenesis and bone formation.

The surface of Ti-oss® contains octacalcium phosphate crystals that:

  • attract and activate bone-forming cells,
  • accelerate the formation of bone matrix,
  • and lead to faster and more stable regeneration.

This effect provides an added benefit compared to conventional bone grafts.

Bone formation takes time. If the graft disappears too quickly, regeneration may be incomplete. Ti-oss® resorbs slowly, so:

  • the augmented area remains stable,
  • the graft doesn’t vanish prematurely from the bone space,
  • and it supports optimal implant timing.

Ti-oss® is sterilized using gamma irradiation, which means:

  • no chemical residues,
  • the natural porosity remains intact,
  • and it provides complete microbiological safety.

This is a key advantage over many heat-treated or chemically sterilized products.

Ti-oss® is made exclusively from 100% spongy (cancellous) bone – no cortical bone. This structure most closely resembles human bone. As a result:

  • cells find natural support,
  • regeneration begins more quickly,
  • and the material integrates organically.

Octabone® is the simplified, budget-friendly version of Ti-oss®:

  • with smaller granule size (0.2–1.0 mm),
  • lower porosity, yet still superior to many competitors,
  • while retaining the rough surface and osteopromotive crystalline structure.
